Kylon vs Slack

Slack is where you reply. Kylon is where it gets finished.

The complaint gets answered in two minutes and fixed in two weeks. Kylon keeps the request, the customer record, the agent doing the work and the person approving it in one thread.

01 In the product

Two agents, one approval, and the CRM open in the same room.

A customer reply lands, the thread answers it, and the record and the follow up email still sit on somebody's list. Here that is one message in the room: one agent proposes the three field changes and the reply, a second sends the mail once it is approved, and the Sales CRM pinned to the room carries the same records as a table or a dashboard. The frame below is the real interface and it is live, so open the Sales CRM tab yourself.

One room, a mailbox and a CRM app. One approval covers the record changes and the reply, and the same records read as a table or a dashboard. Click the tabs. Illustrative data.

02 Which one is the right answer

Not every team should pick the same one.

Slack is the right answer when

The conversation is what you need organized: channels per project, recaps of what you missed, and one search bar over the apps around it. Kylon does not replace that.

Kylon is the right answer when

The talking already happens and the work still sits unfinished. You want the request, the records it touches, the agent that does it and the approval in one place.

03 Operating model

How an agent works in each one

Every statement about Slack below cites Slack's own product or developer documentation. Checked 2026-09-20.

What the AI is

An app inside Slack

Agents are AI apps you build or install. Slack gives them dedicated surfaces, including a split-view container, app threads, text streaming and suggested prompts, and Slackbot is the personal AI agent in the workspace.

An agent in Kylon

An agent is a member of the workspace with its own profile, memory, skills and permissions, and it sits in the rooms you add it to.

Getting something automated

An app inside Slack

Workflow Builder starts from a trigger and runs steps, supports conditional branching with up to 15 conditions, and links tools through connectors for Salesforce and 70+ apps.

You ask for the outcome in the room. The agent does the work that time, and when the same work repeats you save that run as a workflow.

Finding the context

An app inside Slack

Enterprise search retrieves conversations and connected third-party apps in real time, and each answer respects your access to that data at the moment you ask.

The agent keeps the room's history, files and records as durable context, so the next request starts from the decisions the team already made.

Reaching the other tools

An app inside Slack

Slackbot's MCP client connects remote MCP servers and invokes their tools from conversation, and the Slack MCP server lets AI apps search channels, send messages and manage canvases.

The agent runs the connected account itself: reads the CRM, prepares the corrected invoice, drafts the reply and updates the record from the same thread.

Before something goes out

An app inside Slack

Slack's agent guidance asks builders to design for trust, transparency and bounded autonomy; what an installed app does before it acts is set by that app.

Sensitive actions stop as a draft in the thread. A person edits it, approves it, and only then does the agent send it and record the decision.

Questions people ask

Do we have to leave Slack?
No. Slack is a connected service in Kylon, so an agent can read and post there while the work itself happens in the workspace.
How is this different from Slack AI and Slackbot?
Slack's AI works on the conversation: summaries, recaps and search answers. A Kylon agent is a workspace member with its own permissions that runs the work in your connected tools and brings the result back for approval.
Is Kylon just another chat app?
It has rooms and threads, but the unit is a piece of work rather than a message. A request lands in a room, an agent carries it out against the records it touches, and the finished result comes back to the same thread.
Does anything get sent or saved automatically?
Sensitive actions wait for approval before they execute, and agents only see and touch what you allow.
What does Kylon cost?
Kylon is a paid workspace, not a free Slack replacement. Current plans are on the pricing page.
What does the first week look like?
Pick one piece of work that keeps stalling after the first reply, ask for it in a room, connect the tools it needs, and approve the first result. Nothing has to move out of Slack for that.
