Grok Bot vs. Kylon: AI teammates the whole team shares

xAI launched Grok Bot on August 11: AI teammates with their own computer that sign into your tools and finish the job. We read the announcement carefully. Here is where the two products actually diverge.

On August 11, 2026, xAI launched Grok Bot, described as "AI teammates you can give real work to." Each Bot gets its own computer in the cloud, signs into the tools you already use, works across apps and inboxes, and comes back when something needs your approval.

We read the announcement the way we read every launch in this category: closely, and without defensiveness. Grok Bot is a good product built on a premise we share. AI should not be a tab you open. It should be a colleague you hand work to.

So this is not a takedown. It is a map of where two products that believe the same thing end up in different places, and why that difference matters depending on who you are.

What Grok Bot gets right

Agents with their own computer. According to xAI, Bots share a computer of their own in the cloud, so jobs do not stall when you step away. This is the correct architecture. An agent that only runs while your laptop is open is a macro, not a teammate.

Real tool use, not just API calls. xAI says Bots can sign in and work across apps, tools, and websites, "including platforms with no clean API or MCP." That is the honest, unglamorous part of business software. Most of the systems a company actually runs on were never designed to be automated.

Approval as a first-class step. Bots finish jobs end to end and come back only when something needs your approval. Treating human sign-off as a checkpoint in the run, rather than a wrapper around it, is the right instinct for anything touching money, customers, or production.

It was used before it was shipped. xAI built Grok Bot as an internal prototype and says it spread across the company, with teams creating Bots for sales outbound, marketing campaigns, office operations, and bug fixes. Software that survived its own company's daily use tends to be sturdier than software designed for a launch.

The interface is genuinely good. Messaging an agent like a colleague, on desktop and on your phone, is the interaction model most people are ready for. It launched in beta on Mac and iOS with Windows and Linux desktop builds, and 9to5Mac reports Android is listed as coming soon.

Credit where it is due: this is a serious entry, and it moves the whole category forward.

Where the two products diverge

The clearest way to describe the difference is this. Grok Bot gives one person AI teammates. Kylon gives your whole team AI teammates, working in the same room as each other and as the people they work for. Many people, many agents, one job.

That sounds like a slogan until you look at what changes downstream.

Who can see the work

In Grok Bot, you message your Bot and your Bot messages you back. It is a strong single-player loop, and single-player is the right place to start.

In Kylon, the unit is a room, not a conversation. A person posts a brief, three agents pick up different parts of it, and everyone on the team watches the work happen in the same place. Nobody has to ask what the agent already did, because the answer is scrollable. When the person who owns the account is on a plane, the work does not become invisible.

One agent per task, or several agents per problem

Whose permissions the agent uses

Signing an agent into your tools is powerful, and it puts a real question in front of every company: whose access is this, and who is accountable for what the agent did with it.

Kylon answers it in two directions. An agent can hold its own connected accounts for work that belongs to the agent. Or a person can delegate their own account for a specific task, and the agent acts with that person's permissions and no more. If you cannot reach a repository, asking an agent will not get you in. Access follows whoever authorized the action, which is also what makes the audit trail readable after the fact.

Where the output lands

This is the difference that compounds.

A finished task has to live somewhere. In a chat-shaped product, the output of a great agent run is a message, and a month of great agent runs is a scrollback nobody re-reads.

In Kylon, agents write into structured things. Databases with real records. Applications your team asked for in plain language and now uses every day. Workflows that run on a schedule, a webhook, or a data change. Files with history. The value of last month's work is still queryable this month, by a different person, without asking the agent to redo it.

That is the difference between finishing tasks and building a business system.

The attention problem nobody has solved yet

When agents produce ten times the output, the bottleneck stops being the model and starts being the person reading it. Human working memory holds roughly four items. That number does not improve when the model does.

It is especially good if you are already paying for SuperGrok Heavy or Cursor, if you work primarily on your own, and if the work is task-shaped: research this, clear that inbox, fix this bug.

When Kylon is the better choice

Kylon is built for the case where the work does not fit in one person's head or one person's chat window:

  • Several people need to see the same work. Not a summary forwarded later, the work itself.
  • Several agents need to divide the job. Different memory, different skills, different connected accounts, coordinating without a human in the middle.
  • The output has to become a system. A pipeline, a tracker, an internal app, a recurring workflow, not a completed task in a thread.
  • Access has to be accountable. Per-person delegation instead of one signed-in account everyone can borrow.

The honest summary

Grok Bot is a well-designed answer to "how do I get more done?" Kylon is an answer to "how does my company run when half the workforce is agents?"

Those are different questions, and for a while both answers will be right for different people. The launches this year keep pointing the same direction: the assistant era is ending, and the teammate era is starting.
