# What is an agentic operating system?

An agentic operating system is the system a business runs its work on when agents take part of that work: it decides what each agent knows, what it can reach, where people talk to it, and where a person signs off. A computer operating system manages programs and hardware; an agentic one manages agents, context and approvals.

A computer operating system and an agentic one, layer by layer.

## The short definition

An agentic operating system is the layer a business runs on when AI agents do part of the work. It holds the company's context, connects the business data, gives each agent a role and access, puts people and agents in the same place, keeps a record of what was done, and controls where a person signs off.

People use the terms agentic OS, AI OS and AIOS for the same thing. This site uses AI OS; the [AI OS overview](https://kylon.io/ai-os) walks through its seven layers.

## How it differs from a computer operating system

| | Computer operating system | Agentic operating system |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Manages | Programs, memory, files, devices | Agents, context, data access, approvals |
| Unit of work | A process | A request and its result |
| Interface | Windows, files, a terminal | Conversations in Rooms and threads |
| Who checks the output | The program's author | The person who approves the draft |
| Memory | RAM and disk | Company knowledge, agent memory, work history |

## The AIOS research project

AIOS is also the name of an open research project, [agiresearch/AIOS](https://github.com/agiresearch/AIOS), described by its authors as an AI Agent Operating System that embeds a large language model into the operating system. Its kernel manages the resources agents need, such as the LLM, memory, storage and tools, and its foundational paper was accepted at COLM 2025, according to the project's README.

That AIOS is infrastructure for agent developers. The business meaning used on this page sits a level above: how a company's people and agents share context, data and sign-off.

## The parts of a business agentic OS

- **Context:** what the company is, what it sells, how it decides. In Kylon, Workspace knowledge and Agent memory.
- **Data:** the tools the business runs on, read where they live. In Kylon, Connections.
- **Agents:** roles with tools and access, including Claude Code and Codex brought from a team member's computer.
- **Workspace:** where people and agents work together. In Kylon, Rooms and threads.
- **Work record:** who asked, what ran, who approved. In Kylon, the thread itself.
- **Access and approvals:** permissions per member, Agent and Connection, and Approve before anything leaves.
- **Custom software:** Apps built for one job on the same data.

## What to check when you choose one

- Can the agents your team already uses, such as Claude Code and Codex, join as members?
- Can you grant each agent only the data it needs, and take it back?
- Does work that leaves the system wait for a person, with the source next to the draft?
- Can someone who was not in the conversation read what happened later?
- Can the team build a small tool on the same data without a separate project?

## Questions people ask

**Is an agentic operating system the same as an AI OS?** In business use, yes. Both describe the system where a company's people and AI agents share context, data and sign-off. AIOS is also the name of a research project that builds an agent operating system kernel.

**Is an agentic OS a replacement for Windows or macOS?** No. It runs on top of the computers and tools a business already has. It manages agents and their access, not hardware.

**Do I need one if I use a single AI assistant?** A single assistant serves one person. An agentic OS becomes useful when several people and several agents share the same work and someone needs to see and approve what happens.
